TAKE TOP FOUR SPOTS
NOVEMBER 2, 2002 – HINGHAM, MA – Again this year the Wompatuck State Forest in Hingham, Massachusetts was chosen as the site for our annual post-season contest. In addition to being a great late season Formula GX event, this post season contest has become the forum at which the top finishers in the New England season point championships receive their awards. The weather was Seasonably warm, with temperatures peaking in the high fifties, however, a period of rain, for part of the afternoon, was an annoyance during an otherwise perfect day.
This year’s event drew fourteen, of New England’s finest pilots, to draw down the curtain on a very successful year 2003 Formula GX season.
Round one saw Neil Simpson and Brian Stas get off to the best starts posting 830 point and 725 point wins respectively. Six other pilots were close with 500 plus scores. Round two started with a match up between Brian Stas and Neil Simpson that went buzzer to buzzer, lots of good action, with Neil earning a two cut win. Lloyd Seymour and Glenn Simpson also had good round two wins to move into contention. Going into round three Neil had 1555 points, Glenn had 1235 points, Brian had 1025 points and Lloyd had 1020 points. Round three started with a match between Glenn and Neil Simpson that ended in a one cut apiece draw. Brian then got past Ralphael Gonzalez with an airtime win. Next, Dick Sherman got a one cut win over Lloyd Seymour, in an action filled war. Jim Carpenter and Matt Stas, after slow starts, posted good round three wins, emerging as contenders in the process. The last three matches of round four would prove meaningful. In the first of these Lloyd Seymour and Jim Carpenter flew to a low scoring draw. Brian Stas then got past Glenn Simpson, two cuts to one, in a very well flown match. The final round four match was between Neil Simpson and Dick Sherman. They waited until the two and one half minute mark , then all hell broke lose. Several near misses, lots of action and then a mid-air late ended it. The final order of finish was Neil, Brian, Glenn and Jim. Shaylene Vader took home the Spotsman “gold” besting the four other flyers in her division.
The top four flyers used the following equipment:
Neil Simpson Carbon Coyote, OS Max 32SX, GRW hard tank
Brian Stas Stasaman, OS Max 32SX, bladder
Glenn Simpson Yankee Nipper, OS Max 32SX, GRW hard tank
Jim Carpenter Yankee Nipper, OS Max 32SX, GRW hard tank
Thank You, from everyone, to Rick Clark, who secured permission to use the site and also cd’ed the event. Also, Thanks go out to all the guys who helped judge the matches, not just on this day, but all year long.
