SEPTEMBER 21, 2003-WRENTHAM, MA-This weekend marked the annual running of “The Mass Cup Championship”, which is, historically, the largest and most important control line stunt event held in New England. This year the New England Stunt Team invited the New England Combat Association to run a combat event as part of the Mass Cup. A perfect New England day was part of the reward for the nine New England combaters, who were in attendance.

Round one action saw Neil Simpson get off to the best start squeaking past Matt Stas two cuts to one in a match that had lots of good action. Joe Fustolo was running second, just a few points off Neil’s pace. Six other pilots were closely grouped, just behind Joe. Round two started with Neil earning a one cut win over Joe. Jim Carpenter and Paul Kubek were next with Jim improving his position with a two cut win. Mark Rudner was also making a move to the front, posting his second good score of the contest, however, a blown crank in the final seconds, of his second match, forced him to withdraw from the competition. Round three started with a mid-air between Neil Simpson and Jim Carpenter hurting both their cumulative scores. Matt Stas then used a two cut win over Paul Kubek to make a serious run to the front. Going into round three it was Neil (1545pts), Jim (1535pts), Matt (1535pts), Joe (1440pts), Dick (1225pts) and Paul (1215pts). In the third to last match of round four Paul got an airtime win over Joe. In the semi final Jim and Matt each got a cut in a very exciting match that Jim eventually won on airtime. In the final match Neil Simpson and Dick Sherman flew to a one cut apiece draw in an exciting match which, unfortunately, ended in a mid-air with about thirty seconds to go. The final order of finish was Jim (2155pts), Neil (1945pts), Matt (1835pts), Paul (1735pts) and Dick (1625pts). On this day Rick Clark took home the sportsman division win.
