OCTOBER 19, 2003 – WORCESTER, MA -Fourteen contestants were on hand for this, the fifteenth annual running of the Fall Finale Combat Tournament at Boynton Park in Worcester, Massachusetts. This contest was the fifteenth and final stop on this year’s New England Formula GX circuit, the end of the 2003 regular season. The weather was wet and cold, snow flurries in the morning and a cold persistent rain in the afternoon.
Round one got off to a smooth start with several pilots posting good scores the best of which belonged to Brian Stas, an 830 point win. Dick Sherman, Roy Glenn and Paul Kubek were all in close pursuit. Round two started with a match up between Brian and Dick with Dick just getting past Brian two cuts to one. In the next match, Roy jumped into a tie for first place with a three cut win over Paul. Going into round three it was Roy and Dick with 1450 points followed by Brian with 1130 points. Paul Kubek and Dana Lord were also in the hunt with identical 920 point cumulative scores. Dick and Roy started round three with Dick getting a one cut win. In the next flight Brian got a two cut win over Dana in a match that was very well flown. Going into the final round it was Dick (2070pts), Brian (1855pts), Roy (1750pts) and Joe Fustolo (1340pts). The contest looked like it would be decided in the final two matches. The first of these matches would be between Brian Stas and Roy Glenn. Roy got an airtime win when the ground came up on Brian, early in the match. In the final Joe got an airtime win over Dick when engine problems cost Dick the match. When the dust had settled the final order of finish was Roy (2270pts), Dick (2070pts), Brian (1955pts) and Joe (1860pts). Rafael Gonzalez accumulated 1230 points getting the sportsman division win in the process. Rafael was in a day long battle with fellow sportsman pilots Shaylene and Jeff Vader.
Thanks go out to all the guys who shared the thankless job of co-judging the event. Gentlemen please know it’s appreciated. Also thanks to Roy Glenn, who made the long trip, from New Jersey, to make this contest better through his participation.
