Wompatuck Fall Fly-Off
NEIL SIMPSON, PAUL KUBEK & BRIAN STAS,
TAKE TOP THREE SPOTS
SHAY VADER WINS SPORTSMAN

NOVEMBER 4, 2007 – HINGHAM, MA – Again this year the Wompatuck State Forest in Hingham, Massachusetts was chosen as the site for our annual post-season contest. In addition to being a great late season Formula GX event, this post season contest has become the forum at which the top finishers in the New England season point championships receive their awards. The weather was Seasonably warm, with temperatures peaking in the fifties.  There was a warm sun with dimishing winds, as the day rolled on, another good day for combat. This year’s event attracted nine New England pilots, to draw down the curtain on a very successful 2007 Formula GX season.

Round one saw Brian Stas and Glenn Simpson get off to the best starts both posting one cut wins.  In round two Brian stayed hot and got past Glenn with a two cut win. Round two also saw Jeff Vader post his second good win, this one over Rick Clark. Round three started with match up between Jeff and Brian that ended early with a fly-away. In the very next match Ken Hargreaves and Glenn Simpson duplicated their feat, with yet another fly-away, all this serving to tighten the field. Late in round three Neil Simpson used a three cut win over Rick Clark to emerge as a contender. Going into round four Neil had 1530 points, Brian had 1445 points, Paul Kubek, who was flying steady, had 1420 points, Jeff had 1325 points and Matt Stas had 1320 points. Glenn and Ken Hargreaves were also well within striking each sitting with 1220 points. Early in round four Ken used a 620 point win to take the clubhouse lead. In the next match Jeff and Matt mid-aired ending their chances for the day. In the semi-final match Glenn and Paul flew to a one cut apiece draw. In the final Neil and Brian squared off in a match that eventually ended in a one cut apiece draw. Near the end of the match Brian had the lead, when the ground came up, he could have stayed down and won the match and the contest as well, however, Brian comes to compete, so he resumed the fight with just under a minute to go. Just before the final buzzer Neil got a cut to earn a draw in the match and the contest win in the process. The final order of finish was Neil, Paul, Brian, Ken and Glenn. The Sportsman division winner was Shaylene Vader.
