TAKE THE TROPHY SPOTS IN 1/2A

JUNE 11&12, 2005-WRENTHAM, MA-This weekend marked the annual running of “Ron Connors Memorial Spring Stunt Trials”. This year the New England Stunt Team again invited the New England Combat Association to run a combat contest as part of their fine event. We accepted their generous invitation and ran 1/2A combat on Saturday and Formula GX on Sunday.

The 1/2A Combat had only four contestants. All the participants used GRS airplanes and either Foras or Cyclons for power. We ran a round robin format with each pilot flying the other three once each. When those three rounds were over we had a three way tie for first between Ken Hargreaves, Rick Clark and Neil Simpson,  all with two wins and one loss. We decided that one man would get a bye, while the other two would fly for second and third and then fly the man with the bye for first and second. Ken drew the bye. Neil and Rick faced off and after some good action early Neil got a kill to take the win. In the finals Neil and Ken each got a cut, however, Neil got the match and contest win via a few seconds of air time.

Sunday saw eight New England pilots poised and ready for some Formula GX action. Round one had Dick Sherman and Neil Simpson get off to the best starts posting 725 point wins. Round two saw these two square off and fly each other with Neil earnig a one cut win. Joe Fustolo then used a two cut to one win over Glenn Simpson to grab the contest lead. Joey Fustolo, who was flying in his first contest in many a moon, was also flying very well. Round three started with Neil Simpson and Joe Fustolo flying to a one cut apiece draw. Going into round four it was Joe (1860pts), Neil (1855pts), Joey (1430pts), Dick (1225pts ) and Glenn (1210pts). In the third to last match of round four Glenn and Dick flew to a low scoring draw. In the semi final Neil got past Paul Kubek with a one cut win. The final was between Joe and Joey Fustolo, a father and son duel. There was some good action early, however, a mid air, not that far in, hurt both their cumulative scores. The final order of finish was Neil, Joe, Dick, Glenn and Joey. Joey by virtue of his his fifth place finish took home the sportsman “gold” in the process.

Thank you, as always, to all the people who shared the judging responsibilities, to Rick Clark for all his great work and a special thank you to the New England Stunt Team for asking us to be part of their contest.
