SHAY & “LIL SHERM” FINISH IN A DEAD HEAT IN SPORTSMAN
SEPTEMBER 5, 2004-WORCESTER, MA -This year’s New England Championships attracted fifteen pilots for the fifteenth annual running of this very successful Formula GX happening. The location was Boynton Park in Worcester, Massachusetts. The weather was perfect with seventy degree temperatures, high cloud cover and a gentle breeze.
Paul Kubek set the early pace with a round one three cut win. Round two started with Paul earning a one cut win over Matt Stas. Round two also saw Lloyd Seymour get into the hunt, with a two cuts to one victory over Joe Fustolo. At the halfway point it was Paul with 1450 points followed by Lloyd with 1250 points. Ken Hargreaves, Jim Carpenter, and Neil Simpson were also close with cumulative scores in the 1100 point range. Round three started with Lloyd Seymour earning a two cut win over Paul Kubek. Later in the round Matt Stas jumped into contention with a two cuts to one win over Jim Carpenter. Going into the final round it was Lloyd (1975pts), Paul (1750pts), Matt (1645pts), Jim (1540pts) and Neil (1535pts). Joe Fustolo, who had put in three solid rounds, was also close with 1420 points. The final four flights of the contest would prove meaningful. In the first of these Ken Hargreaves and Joe Fustolo had a great battle with Joe prevailing two cuts to one. The next match was between Rick Clark and Neil Simpson. This match had lots of good flying and went buzzer to buzzer, ending in a two cuts apiece draw. The semi final saw Jim Carpenter get past Paul Kubek. Each pilot had a cut, however, a missed airtime proved costly for Paul. In the finals Lloyd seized the contest win in an action filled win over Matt Stas, both pilots giving a good account of themselves. When it all shook out the top four were Lloyd (2700pts), Jim (2160pts), Neil (2150pts) and Joe (2145pts). Meanwhile there was a day long battle going on for the Sportsman “gold” between Brian Seymour, Shaylene Vader and “Lil Sherm”. Shay and “Lil Sherm” finished on top with identical cumulative scores of 1450 points.
The top four flyers plus the sportsman winner received beautiful awards. Every competitor received a T-shirt to commemorate their participation in this annual GX happening. In addition, there were great raffle prizes which included OS Max and Magnum engines, fuel tanks and boxes of wing cores. Hog Heaven Hobbies, GRW Model Products, J&J Sales, The Corehouse, and the Connecticut Ringer Model Airplane Club all made serious cash or merchandise contributions. Thank You to all these great sponsors from all of us. As always, thank you to all the people who shared in the judging.
