SEPTEMBER 24&25, 2005-WRENTHAM, MA-This weekend marked the annual running of “The Mass Cup Championship”, which is, historically, the largest and most important control line stunt event held in New England. Again, this year the New England Stunt Team invited the New England Combat Association to run combat events as part of the Mass Cup. A perfect New England weekend was part of the reward for the New England combaters, who were in attendance.

On Saturday, eleven contestants were on hand for the Formula GX event. Dick Sherman and Brian Stas got off to the best starts each with three cut wins over their opponents. Just off that pace, Ken Hargreaves and Neil Simpson were running third and fourth with good round one wins of their own. Both Dick and Brian stayed hot in round two flying each other to a one cut apiece draw. Meanwhile, Neil just got past Ken with a one cut win. At the halfway point it was Dick and Brian with 1340 points followed by Neil and Jim Carpenter, both with 1240 points. Ken was in the hunt with 1025 points. Round three started with Neil and Dick flying to a one cut apiece draw. Brian then jumped into the lead with a two cut win over Jim. Jeff Vader also got into contention with a two cut to one win over Shaylene. Going into round four it was Brian(2065pts), Dick (1850pts), Neil (1750pts), Jeff (1655pts), Jim (1540pts) and Ken (1535pts). In the third to last match of round four Jim and Ken had a wild one with Jim just getting past Ken two cuts to one. In the semi final Jeff got a one cut win over Dick in another action filled affair. In the final match Neil and Brian flew to a one cut apiece draw. The final order of finish was Brian (2575pts), Jeff (2275pts), Neil (2260pts), and Jim (2165pts). On this day Richard Sherman took home the sportsman division win accumulating 1945 points in the process.

On Sunday, five contestants were on hand for F2D combat. Lots of good matches all day long, however, by the end of round four, only Mark Rudner remained undefeated securing first place in the process. Rick Clark and Neil Simpson finished tied for second with two wins and two losses each. In the fly off Neil got past Rick to take home the second spot.
