TAKE THE F2D TROPHY SPOTS

SEPTEMBER 25&26,2004-WRENTHAM, MA-This weekend marked the annual running of “The Mass Cup Championship”, which is, historically, the largest and most important control line stunt event held in New England. Again, this year the New England Stunt Team invited the New England Combat Association to run combat events as part of the Mass Cup. A perfect New England weekend was part of the reward for the New England combaters, who were in attendance.

On Saturday, twelve contestants were on hand for the Formula GX event. There was a great deal of good action in the first two rounds with many pilots in contention at the halfway point. Dick Sherman had accumulated 1235 points with both Joe Fustolo and Jeff Vader sitting in a virtual tie, with Dick, at 1230 points. In addition, Mark Rudner, Glenn Simpson, Paul Kubek and Neil Simpson were all within a hundred points of the leader. Round three saw both Dick Sherman and Mark Rudner establish themselves as the clear frontrunners each securing two cut wins over Jeff Vader and Joe Fustolo respectively. Round three also saw Neil Simpson and Paul Kubek fly to a one cut apiece draw, each staying in the hunt, somewhat off the pace. Going into round four it was Dick (1960pts), Mark (1865pts), Paul (1640pts), Neil (1640pts), Jeff (1630pts) and Joe (1630pts). In the third to last match of round four Joe and Neil flew to a low scoring draw. In the semi final Paul got an airtime win over Jeff. In the final match Dick and Mark waged war in a match that went buzzer to buzzer with each pilot securing two cuts in the process. The final order of finish was Dick (2575pts), Mark (2480pts), Paul (2160pts), and Neil (2050pts). On this day “Lil-Sherm” took home the sportsman division win.

On Sunday, six contestants were on hand for F2D combat. Lots of good matches all day long, however, as the day unfolded, only Mark Rudner and Matt Stas remained undefeated. Good flying in the final, as well, with Mark earning the contest win. Brian Stas and Ken Hargreaves finished tied for third. The fly off was well flown with Brian sneaking out the win by just a handful of points.

Thank you, as always, to all the people who shared the judging responsibilities and a special thank you to the New England Stunt Team for asking us to be part of their great annual happening.
