JULY 20, 2002 – EASTHAMPTON, MA - On this date the New England combat faithful traveled to Easthampton, Massachusetts for the Western Mass Championships cd’ed by Dave Parizo. There were eleven contestants on hand for this one. Weather conditions were near perfect, warm and sunny with a light breeze.

Round One saw Jim Carpenter, Paul Kubek and Len Minick grab the early lead all posting  830 point wins.   Just off that pace were Roy Glenn and Neil Simpson, who drew each other in round one, and flew to a one cut apiece draw. It was a good match that went the full five minutes. Round Two started with a match between Jim Carpenter and Paul Kubek with Jim getting a two cuts to one win. Next, Neil Simpson got a two cut win over Len Minick. In the next match Dick Sherman and Roy Glenn flew to a one-cut apiece draw. Glenn Simpson and Louis Lopez, after slow starts, also emerged as contenders each posting thee cut wins in round two. At the halfway point it was Jim with 1555 points followed by Neil with 1235 points with Paul and Glenn each with 1230 points. Just behind that group Len, Louis, Roy and Dick were in close pursuit.

Round Three started with Jim Carpenter out flying Neil Simpson three cuts to one cementing his hold on first place. In the next match, after some good action early, Glenn Simpson and Paul Kubek mid-aired hurting both their chances. In the next match Louis got past Len two cuts to one. Roy Glenn and Dave Parizo faced off , next, with Roy earning a three cut win. Dick Sherman, in the next match, got a three cut win over Jeff Vader. Going into Round four it was Jim with 2385 points followed by Roy (1850pts), Dick (1845pts), Louis (1755pts), Neil (1635pts), Glenn (1630pts) and Len (1530pts).

In the third to last match of round four Neil got past Glenn two cuts to one in a well flown match. In the semi-final match Dick Sherman got a three cut win over Louis Lopez in a very exciting match that had lots of twisting and turning. In the final match Roy Glenn got a one cut win over Jim Carpenter, but it was too little, too late as Jim earned the contest win. The final order of finish was Jim (2685pts), Dick (2575pts), Roy (2470pts), Neil (2360pts), Louis (2055pts), Len (2050pts) and Jeff Vader ( 2035pts). Jeff ,also, took home the trophy for first in the Sportsman division.

Jim Carpenter and Dick Sherman used GRW tanked, 32SX powered “Yankee Nippers”. Roy Glenn uses a bladder tanked, FP25 powered  “Hobart Special” which is a very light cored wing foamy. Neil Simpson used a “Carbon Coyote” powered by a 32SX with a GRW tank.
