RICK CLARK WINS SPORTSMAN

AUGUST 17, 2003 – KINGSTON, MA - Ten contestants were on hand for this year’s Eastern Mass Championships. The weather was warm, however a high overcast kept things comfortable.

In round one action Jim Carpenter and Neil Simpson got off to the best starts followed closely by Dick Sherman and Brian Stas. Round two started with a good match between Jim Carpenter and Neil Simpson with Jim earning a one cut win. Dick Sherman also stayed hot with a one cut win, of his own, over Brian Stas. At the halfway point it was Jim with 1450 points followed by Dick (1245pts), Neil (1130pts), Rick Clark (1030pts) and Glenn Simpson (1020pts)

Round three started with a match between Dick Sherman and Jim Carpenter with Dick getting a one cut win. The next match was between Rick Clark and Neil Simpson. It was action packed when, with both pilots having secured a cut, a mid-air occurred. In the next match Matt Stas and Glenn Simpson flew to a cut apiece draw.

Going into round four it was Dick with 1865 points followed by Jim (1750pts), Glenn (1530pts), Neil (1430pts), Matt Stas (1420pts) and Brian Stas (1330pts). This contest would come down to the final three flights. In the first of these flights Neil Simpson and Brian Stas flew to a one cut apiece draw in an action packed, well flown match. In the semi-final flight Jim Carpenter and Matt Stas had a fly away, early in the match, which hurt both of their cumulative scores. In the final match Dick Sherman got past Glenn Simpson two cuts to one and took home the contest win in the process. The final order of finish was Dick (2590pts), Jim (1950pts), Neil (1940pts), Glenn (1930pts) and Brian (1840pts). Rick Clark was sixth with 1640 points just edging out Shaylene Vader, by ten points, to take home the Sportsman Division “gold”.

The top four all used Yankee Nippers or Yankee Nipper “hybrids”.  They were all OS Max 32sx powered on GRW chicken hopper tanks.

Thank You to Brian Stas who got the permit for the field and cd’ed the event. Thank You, also, to Brian and his wife, Carol, who took us back to their home, following the contest, for food and refreshment. Carol, the blueberry squares were every bit as good as I remembered them to be.
