The Colchester Combat Challenge

PAUL KUBEK, GLENN SIMPSON, NEIL SIMPSON

& ERNIE CAROSELLA ARE TOP FOUR

SPORTSMAN TO ERNIE CAROSELLA

MAY 18, 2003 – COLCHESTER, CT – Six contestants were on hand for this year’s Colchester Combat Classic. This was a beautiful New England day; temperatures in the high sixties, sunny, low humidity with almost no wind.

Round one saw everyone start slow, with Paul Kubek showing the way with 520 points.  In round two Paul  held his position atop the leader board earning a one cut win over Ernie Carosella. At the halfway point the top three were Paul (1140pts), Len Minick (920pts) and Glenn Simpson (820pts). In the first match of round three Paul got past Len with a one cut win. In the next match Glenn  jumped into serous contention with a three cut win over Ernie Carosella. In the final round three match Neil Simpson earned a one cut win over Rick Clark. Going into round four Paul had 1760 points, followed by Glenn (1650pts), Neil (1340pts) and Len (1220pts).  The first match of round four was between Ernie Carosella and Rick Clark. These guys were in a day long battle for the sportsman “gold” with Ernie holding a slight lead. This match was destined to determine the sportsman winner. The guys mixed it up pretty well for a minute or two and then a double kill left the match tied and Ernie with the sportsman win. The next match saw Neil Simpson and Len Minick face off in an action filled match that went buzzer to buzzer. Neil earned a two cut win which put a little pressure on the leaders. In the final match Paul Kubek and Glenn Simpson would wage war. Barring a mid-air the winner would take home the contest win. Glenn got a cut somewhere around the three minute mark, however, Paul would not be denied coming back late in the match with a cut of his own to tie the match and earn the contest win. When everything was sorted out the final order of finish was Paul (2270pts),  Glenn (2160pts), Neil (2065pts) with Ernie and Len tied at 1520 points. Ernie won a coin flip with Len to take home fourth place as well as the Sportsman trophy.

The top four used the following equipment: Paul Kubek used a OS35FPS powered foamy that was bladder tanked. Glenn and Neil Simpson used Carbon Coyotes with OS32sx’s on GRW chicken hoppers. Ernie Carosella used a foamy, of his own design, that was Fox 40 powered on a GRW chicken hopper.

This was another good contest that came about due to Dana Lord’s willingness to spend time securing a permit to use the facilities at the Bacon Academy in Colchester. Thank You Dana !
